AAAM is a member of the U.S. National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) which represents the American museum community in the International Council of Museums.

The Association also participates in the International Partnerships Among Museums (IPAM) program, which promotes long-term institutional relationships between U.S. and foreign museums.
