Standing Professional Committees
Standing Professional Committees (SPCs) of the Association of African American Museums are vital in advancing the goals of the Association; to assist the Association and serve as a source of are intended to represent broad ongoing interests of members of the museum profession; and should have objectives that support and enhance the Association on a national level.

There are eight committees representing broad areas of museum activities:
  • Administration & Development Specialists
  • Alliance for ProfessionalDevelopment
  • Archivists & Librarians
  • Curators & Registrars
  • Educators & Special Event Coordinators
  • Exhibit & Design Specialists
  • Directors Roundtable
  • Disaster Task Force

CRITERIA

A SPC is defined by the AAAM's Board of Directors as "an organized group of museum professionals, museum intuitions, and related institutions and individuals, included, but not limited to, specialized academic background and training, who are active members of AAAM."

GUIDELINES

  1. The committees shall elect its own chair and shall meet at least once a year, normally in conjunction with the Association's fall conference.
  2. The committees may elect officers and prescribe dues in addition to regular Association dues for the purpose of carrying out special programs. Any new changes in committees' elected officials will be immediately forwarded to the Board of Directors and the Executive Director.
  3. The Board of Directors of the Association shall regularly review the activities of all SPCs and may, by majority vote, withdraw the status accorded to the committee.
  4. The committees provide services not only to their members, but also to members of the Association, and the entire museum community, which in turn provides the Association the opportunity to respond to the needs of its members, professionals, volunteers, and others in the museum field.
  5. The Board of Directors encourages the work of the SPCs, helps expand better communications between the board and the committees, and to ensure that the SPCs are carrying out their responsibilities accordingly.
  6. A copy of the minutes and activities, financial reports, committee meetings, committee regulations and memberships of the SPCs must be submitted to the Board of Directors in a timely manner, complete and up-to-date.
  7. A list of current members, which includes their present title and duties of their museum or organization (voluntary or professional), and the financial status of their committee must be kept up-to-date and on file with the Executive Director of the Association.
  8. The Board of Directors must review all special activities or programming before such activities are carried out.
