DuSable Museum of African American History

“Museums and the Preservation of the African American Experience”
Our opening panel will focus on a history of African American museums and the Black museum movement that resulted in the formation of the African American Museums Association in 1978 and the Association of African American Museums in 1998. A panel of museum pioneers, museums scholars, professionals and artists will discuss the early years of the Black museum experience and the formal development of a professional association directed at the particular work of the Black museum. In addition, a lively discussion of the future prospects of the Black museum and its role and responsibilities as purveyors of Africana culture and history.

The second panel will discuss the foundation of African American historical and cultural preservation and the evolution of African American museums, archives, academic studies departments and professional and cultural associations. This panel will further discuss historical nuances of the relationship and needed collaboration between museum professionals, artists, scholars— and how best we can preserve and interpret the African American experience.
