Columbia College Chicago is pleased to welcome the Association of African American Museums to Chicago with a light reception for its members. The reception will be held on the 3rd floor of the Columbia College Chicago Library, located at 624 S. Michigan Ave., just steps away from the Chicago Hilton and Towers. Also in attendance will be representatives from the Black Metropolis Research Consortium (BMRC), based at the University of Chicago.

The BMRC is an unincorporated Chicago-based association of libraries, universities, and other archival institutions with major holdings of materials that document African American and African diasporic culture, history, and politics, with a specific focus on materials relating to Chicago. Experience the first museum in the nation dedicated to freedom and the first amendment of the United States Constitution. Founded in 2006, the Freedom Museum inspires generations to understand, value and protect freedom. Gain a stronger insight into the daily struggle for freedom and its protection through the First Amendment through interactive exploration.

“Taste of Black Chicago”

DuSable Museum of African American History

Join us at the first independent museum of African American history for a culture-filled evening as we celebrate the Association’s 30th anniversary! Experience the best of Black Chicago through music, performance, food and art. The DuSable Museum of African American History, founded in 1961, is dedicated to the collection, study, preservation, interpretation and dissemination of the history and culture of Africans and Americans of African descent.

Eat, drink and visit the casino. The Majestic Star Casino, LLC ("the Company") was formed by Mr. Don Barden in December 1993 to pursue one of two gaming licenses at Buffington Harbor in Gary, Indiana. In June 1996, along with Trump Indiana, both companies opened dockside facilities to take advantage of gaming opportunities in the Chicago land market, now the third largest gaming market in the United States behind Las Vegas and Atlantic City. I n 2003, Black Enterprise Magazine selected Barden as Company of the Year. In 2004, Barden received the Trumpet Award for Entrepreneur of the Year. When one of Barden's companies acquired the Fitzgeralds Las Vegas Casino in Las Vegas he became the first black casino owner in Vegas.
