2008 CALL FOR PROPOSALS

*The deadline to submit proposals is closed.*

REFLECT, REINVEST, REVITALIZE!
PRESERVING THE AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE

AAAM invites proposals for presentation for the 2008 Annual Conference to be held August 27 – 30 at the Hilton Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. Our institutional host will be the DuSable Museum of African American History, the only major independent institution in Chicago established to preserve and interpret the historical experiences and achievements of African Americans.

For thirty years, the Association has helped shape the African American museum experience through the celebration of history, diversity, culture, environment and identity. The Reflect, Reinvest, Revitalize conference provides opportunities to reflect upon the Association’s impact on the profession, reinvest in museum best practices, and revitalize the commitment to professionalism. In a return “back to basics” of the business of museums, participants are invited to exchange innovations in areas of museum practice such as collections management, interpretative practices, conservation techniques, and administrative strategies.

Proposals should address the conference theme: reflection, reinvestment and revitalization. Utilizing these topics, sessions can emphasize watershed exhibitions featuring proficient curatorial practices such as "Field to Factory," or profile successful development campaigns which reinvest in the growth of an organization, and programs that revitalize professionalism in all manner of museum operations.

Listed below are suggested themes for session proposals:

Audience Development
How do you research, define and understand your target audience?

Disaster Preparedness & Recovery
What are the best strategies in planning and executing your disaster plan?

Interpretation & Exhibitions
What are the ‘do’s and don’ts’ when developing and marketing a traveling exhibition?
What models exist for innovative educational community-based projects & programs? What are the latest trends in exhibition development and design?

Collections Management

Staff & Volunteer Development

Governance
How does an effective code of ethics impact museum staff and board? What is the profile of an effective board? How does board selection and participation impact continued growth of our institutions?
