QUILTING AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN'S HISTORY: OUR CHALLENGES, CREATIVITY, AND CHAMPIONS

Exhibit Organizer: National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center of the Ohio Historical Society

Description: "Quilting African American Women's History" brings American audiences a collection of powerful artworks that not only excite but educate. The diversity of genre and technique represented in the works reflect the diversity of African American peoples and communities as no previous exhibition has, dispelling long-held misconceptions of African American quilt aesthetics.

For the African American viewer, the exhibition is a validating expression of cultural genius. For viewers external to the culture, it is an awaking to the unknown and uncelebrated contributions of African American artists. For scholars of the art and American studies, the exhibition is fertile soil for research inquiry and artistic critique of some of the finest material culture works emanating from contemporary American artistic masters.

"Quilting African American Women's History" is curated for the National Afro-American Museum in Wilberforce, Ohio by Dr. Carolyn L. Mazloomi. Mazloomi is a historian, independent curator, and among the most influential African American quilt historians and quilting artists in the United States today. Her quilts are in corporate and private collections and in numerous museums, including the Smithsonian. Her books include "Spirit of the Cloth" (1998); "Threads of Faith" (2004); and "Textural Rhythms" (2007). In 1985, she founded the Women of Color Quilters Network, which has been a major force in fostering quilt making in the African American community.

The exhibition of 100 quilts opens at the NAAMCC on March 8, 2008, and includes works by some of America's best-known African American fiber artists such as Tina Williams Brewer, Adriene Cruz, Michael Cummings, Peggie Hartwell, Viola Burley Leak and Jim Smoote.
