ASSOCIATION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUMS

The Association of African American Museums (AAAM) by-laws state:

“The Board of Directors shall consist of a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 15 board members, the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 11 members at large, who shall be elected by the members of the Association in a manner provided in the by-laws. 

The following skills/abilities are being sought as part of the upcoming board slate:

  • Strong marketing, public relations, communications and fund development experience
  • Experience in staffing and work site management
  • Strong board non-profit governance knowledge and experience
  • Strong financial records, budgeting, accounting, and contracting experience
  • Advocacy/Government Relations
  • Strong knowledge African American museums and the museum field
  • Social media expertise and technical skills
  • Organizational structure knowledge
  • Very strong leadership skills applicable to a national organization

AAAM board candidates agree to the following requirements:

  • For new board members: willingness to actively serve on a minimum of two board standing or ad-hoc committees.
  • For board members with 2 years or more service: willingness to chair a board committee and actively serve on a minimum of 2 standing committees or 1 standing and 1 ad hoc committee.
  • Board members should have support of their organizations senior staff or board
  • Expectations that AAAM is a working board and directors are not compensated for service
  • active support of the AAAM annual conference
  • Ability to attend two annual board meetings, as well as the annual board retreat/orientation. 
  • Participation in AAAM fundraising campaigns and active recruitment of new AAAM institutional and individual members.
  • It is encouraged that board members become lifetime members of the organization
