February 2009 The third round for the IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf is now open! Apply online from now until March 9, 2009. Don’t wait! The Institute of Museum and Library Services will award 1,000 additional sets of the IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf in 2009. The application period for this, the third and final round of competition for the Bookshelf, is now open and will conclude on March 9, 2009. The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) is proud to be the participating partner in this program. AASLH will handle the application process and the distribution of the Bookshelf to the winners. IMLS has awarded over 1,800 sets of the Bookshelf in the two previous application rounds to museums, libraries, archives, aquariums, zoos, nature centers and botanical gardens. The awards have been made to collecting institutions in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam. To see the list of recipients, click on the link to the right.The Bookshelf is a free collection of reference material assembled by experts to help you preserve your collections. For a complete list of the Bookshelf publications, instructions about how to apply online, and important application details, visit www.aaslh.org/Bookshelf. Priority will be given to small institutions with collections, though large institutions are also encouraged to apply. This includes museums, art and historical, archives, libraries with special collections, nature centers, zoos, aquariums, and botanical gardens. The Bookshelf will be distributed free to 2,000 institutions. Over 800 institutions were awarded the Bookshelf during the first round. Over 90% of those who applied were winners! The retail value of the publications is over $800 and some publications can’t be found except in the Bookshelf.
