December 2006 Thirty (30) African-American museum professionals from fifteen (15) institutions will have the opportunity to participate in a unique 18-month professional development experience. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI), in partnership with the Association of African American Museums (AAAM), will launch Heritage Keepers: A Leadership Initiative for African American Museums. This 18-month project is designed to build institutional capacity in four areas: strategic planning, budget management, audience development and collaboration, and grant writing. Based on a team concept, Heritage Keepers is designed to enhance the management skills of current museum leaders and nurture the development of a new generation of leadership for African American museums. Each of the fifteen museums chosen to participate in the project will select a team composed of one mid-to-upper level staff member and a promising junior staff member from their institution. The teams will participate in intensive training activities that include workshops at BCRI, consultant site-visits, electronic chats among participants, and periodic assessment. The deadline for applications is February 1, 2007. Application materials will be available December 15, 2006 by visiting the BCRI Web site at www.bcri.org or contacting Priscilla Hancock Cooper, Vice President of Institutional Programs, by e-mail at pcooper@bcri.org or phone (205) 328-9696, ext. 233. This project is supported by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services' new African American History and Culture grants initiative. ### |
